Conservation Architect
I am passionate about making historic buildings and places thrive.
My best-practice approach helps enable the considerate and effective development of historic sites and environments.
I will support your project in a collaborative way, delivering guidance and advice that considers both the past and future value, as well as the function and potential of historic assets.
For National Lottery Heritage Fund projects I provide the lead role, coordinating and directing the team.
These are the typical phases of project work.
1
All projects start with a meeting to discuss your requirements and to develop the initial brief.
I will also advise on the need for other services, such as a full digital survey, and the involvement of other professionals, such as a structural engineer, quantity surveyor or perhaps other specialist conservation experts.

2
I undertake desk-based and archival research to ensure a robust understanding of the existing site in relation to its heritage value.
Where I am providing full architectural services, I undertake a full site appraisal to establish all potential constraints and, if required, a fabric condition survey.

From the initial brief and armed with an understanding of the site, I will develop sketch design options.
I work with you to agree the best layout – one which meets the requirements of the brief, is appropriate to the historic context and considers any fabric repairs.

I test the preferred option in further design detail. At this stage, I also undertake any consultation required with key stakeholders or interest groups.
We develop the proposals in line with National Lottery Heritage Fund. I may advise you to undertake a pre-application consultation with the local planning authority.

5
I prepare all the necessary documentation for the planning and listed building consent submissions.
6
I ensure that the design is developed and thoroughly coordinated, working alongside the required team of consultants. And I’ll liaise with Building Control to ensure the proposals meet the necessary regulations.
7
I advise on the best way to take the project forward to construction and will liaise with the team and contractors through the tendering process and gearing up to start on site.
8
As the project commences on site, I provide the necessary information to the contractor and liaise with them to get the project underway. I’ll monitor progress on site and answer queries throughout the process.
9
I keep in touch with you and project stakeholders throughout the handover and initial occupancy, supporting this final stage of the project.
